Reintroducing: The Current

“The Current” emerged from Drift Magazine as the publication was starting to grow into itself. We noticed there was not a central place to promote events in Austin, specifically those focused on the environment and sustainability. “The Current” became a way for us to emulate other social media organizations we had seen bringing people together like the Instagram account named @whenwherewhataustin. At the same time, we understand  students do not want to spend a fortune to have fun, so a core tenet of “The Current” has been focusing on free or low-cost activities.

After beginning “The Current'' in the fall of 2022, we have been consistently posting weekly events on Instagram focused on the environment, sustainability and the outdoors. Through our weekly Sunday posts, our Drift audience has found their way to food forests, creek clean-ups and stargazing parties ever since our first edition of “The Current,” just over a year ago. This semester, we will be adding blog posts about our favorite events and our experiences attending them, in hopes that we can convince our readers to get drifty with us. You will be able to find all of our blog posts here on our website, as well as a calendar of all the events to keep an eye on. We will, of course, continue to post weekly on Instagram with the latest events we can find, as well as some of our all-time favorites.

“The Current” is all about going with the flow, trying something new and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Whether that’s going to a free yoga class downtown or a group hike, it’s all about connection and allowing people to go where the current takes them.
